Reciprocal Relationships between Collective Efficacy and Health

Abstract
Previous studies of health inequality has rarely paid attention to social contexts in relation to health distribution. Social disorganization theory focuses upon what neighborhood social and structural characteristics are associated with collective social integration and health disparity as a result. This article examines whether collective efficacy is associated with health status using KGSS(Korea General Social Survey) data. We investigate not only causal relationship but also reverse causal relationship between collective efficacy and health because we cannot exclude the selection mechanism that healthier people reside in neighborhoods with high collective efficacy while employing cross-sectional data. Our findings document both causal and reverse-causal relationships with adjustment for demographic and socioeconomic background variables; (1) collective efficacy is associated with better health , and (2) people with better health status is more likely to report higher levels of collective efficacy. Therefore this study suggests that collective efficacy should be considered a critical factor to account for health inequality in Korea case.
